Exploring Ultimate Questions About the Future of Intelligence

Welcome to the Center for the Future Mind

The Center is a multi-disciplinary hub where thought leaders in philosophy, complex systems, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience come together to analyze vital scientific, societal, and ethical issues. With world-renowned experts, a major media presence, and regular presentations to Congress and their staff, the Center aims to deepen our understanding of the future of intelligence.

The Center explores questions like the following:
•  How does machine intelligence compare to human intelligence? And how can these distinct intelligences best work together?
•  What is the nature of the self, mind and consciousness?
•  What are the epistemic strengths and weaknesses of today’s large language models (LLMs)?

The Center is directed by Susan Schneider, the William F. Dietrich Distinguished Professor at Florida Atlantic University and former NASA Chair and Distinguished Scholar at the Library of Congress.

Spotlight: Center Activities
Mindfest 2024: David Chalmers & Scott Aaronson: Are we living in a simulation?

The philosophical implications of the simulation hypothesis, exploring whether our reality might be a simulation and engaging with various perspectives on the topic.

Mindfest 2024: Harmut Neven: Consciousness via Quantum Superposition

Conscious moments are generated by the formation of quantum superpositions, challenging traditional views on the origins of consciousness.

Mindfest 2024: Sara Walker: Earth Holds The Key To Alien Life

The importance of viewing life and consciousness through the lens of assembly theory and how consciousness itself could be fundamentally expanded.

Mindfest 2024: Michael Lynch: "Epistemic Shock" & AI Risks

Exploring complex themes around artificial general intelligence (AGI), truth-seeking, and humanity's challenges in the face of emerging AI risks.

Mindfest 2024: Mark Bailey: Disinformation & National Security

How AI-driven tools can amplify misinformation campaigns, raising new challenges for national security and democratic institutions.

Wall Street Journal: Artificial Intelligence Needs Guardrails and Global Cooperation

Risks abound when the internet becomes a playpen for thousands, perhaps millions, of artificial intelligence systems.
